Cipriano de Rore | Passio Secundum Johannem

With his Passion setting de Rore created a musical language completely new to his time. The different voices of the evangelist, Christus, groups (disciples, Jews, soldiers etc.) and the smaller roles (Peter, Pilate) are clearly delineated through stylistic variations and the changes in forces used. Solo sections with instrumental accompaniment contrast with polyphonic a cappella movements. This Passion is not only exceptionally emotionally composed and a powerful, varied experience for the listener, but also an exclusive (and almost “exotic”) alternative to the prevalent Passions of the Baroque period.
