50 Years Huelgas : Radio interview with Paul Van Nevel.

In 1971, the Huelgas Ensemble performed for the first time in a small room above Leuven's cult café De Blauwe Schuit. Five decades on, Paul Van Nevel and his companions are still as undisturbed as ever to perform the finest Renaissance polyphony from monastery archives and libraries.

Quel est le secret d'Huelgas? Comment ce petit ensemble de douze chanteurs par vient-il à faire salle (ou église) comble pour les meandres de l’Ars Subtilior de Chypre au XIVe siècle ou les Lamentations de Jérémie de Fray José de Vaquedano?

Wenn das flämische Huelgas Ensemble un- ter seinem Gründer und Leiter Paul Van Nevel also in diesem Jahr seinen 50. Geburtstag begeht, kann man nur sehr herzlich gratulieren: Dazu, dass diese Gruppe noch besteht, dass Van Nevel an seinem Repertoire festhält, unddass sich an seinem Streben nach Perfektion seit jeher nichts geändert hat.

Hij ontketende een revolutie in de oude muziek. Eerst voor anderhalve man en een paardenkop, nu voor volle zalen. Paul Van Nevel blikt terug op 50 jaar Huelgas Ensemble en frisse weerbarstigheid.‘We hebben concerten geweigerd omdat we geen pitteleer wilden dragen.’

50 jaar geleden richtte Paul Van Nevel het Huelgas Ensemble op en dat wordt in Bozar gevierd met een concert. Van Nevel is nog altijd de drijvende kracht en na een halve eeuw is de ontroering om de schoonheid van de polyfonie niet weg. 'Heel belangrijk is de stilte.'
