Le Huelgas Ensemble organise deux week-ends au cours desquels notre directeur artistique Paul Van Nevel donnera une introduction étoffée aux notations historiques de la musique polyphonique. Paul Van Nevel y partage ses connaissances approfondies, acquises au cours d'innombrables études et de la mise en pratique de son travail artistique depuis plus de 50 ans. Les règles des différentes notations ne sont pas simplement expliquées de manière sèche et musicologique, mais sont toujours mises en relation avec la pratique musicale. L'objectif est de rendre capable les participants de lire ces notations anciennes de manière autonome, de sorte qu'un accès direct à la musique soit possible, sans passer par des transcriptions modernes. L'accès authentique par les sources permet une expérience intense et directe de l'esthétique musicale de l'époque. Cette attitude ouvre un nouvel horizon aux participants pour comprendre la musique polyphonique. En même temps, cette connaissance est la clé pour pouvoir partir en voyage pour une découverte personelle des sources anciennes.

Tous les participants reçoivent une vaste collection de matériel - comme base de travail pendant les deux weekends, mais aussi comme point de départ pour des études autonomes approfondies.

Groupe cible

Tous les amateurs de musique polyphonique peuvent participer (professionnels et non professionnels) sachant lire une notation moderne. Le nombre maximum de participants est limité à 10 - 12 personnes.

Het Huelgas Ensemble organiseert twee weekends waarin onze artistiek leider Paul Van Nevel een uitgebreide introductie geeft tot de historische notatie van polyfone muziek. Paul Van Nevel zal de uitgebreide kennis delen die hij heeft opgedaan in talloze studies en in de realisatie van zijn artistieke werk gedurende meer dan 50 jaar. De regels van de verschillende notaties worden niet zomaar op een droge musicologische manier uitgelegd, maar zijn steeds gerelateerd aan de muzikale praktijk. Het doel is de deelnemers in staat te stellen deze oude notaties zelfstandig te kunnen lezen zodat een directe toegang tot de muziek mogelijk is, zonder omwegen via moderne transcripties. De authentieke toegang via de bronnen maakt een intensieve en directe ervaring van de toenmalige muzikale esthetiek mogelijk en opent voor de deelnemers een nieuw inzicht in de polyfone muziek. Tegelijkertijd is deze kennis de sleutel om zelf op ontdekkingsreis te gaan in de oude bronnen.

Alle deelnemers ontvangen uitgebreid materiaal als basis voor hun werk tijdens de twee weekenden, maar ook als startpunt voor verdere zelfstandige studies.

Doelgroep

De doelgroep zijn alle liefhebbers van polyfone muziek (professioneel en niet-professioneel) die moderne notatie kunnen lezen. Het maximum aantal deelnemers is beperkt tot 10 à 12.

The Huelgas Ensemble is organising two weekends during which our artistic director, Paul Van Nevel, will give a comprehensive introduction to the historical notation of polyphonic music. Paul Van Nevel will share his extensive knowledge, which he has gained through countless studies and the realisation of his artistic work over more than 50 years. The rules of the various notations are not simply explained in dry musicological terms, but a reference to musical practice is always established. The aim is to enable the participants to read these old notations independently, so that direct access to the music is possible without detours via modern transcriptions. Authentic access via the sources enables an intensive and direct experience of the musical aesthetics of the time and opens up a new understanding of polyphonic music for the participants. At the same time, this knowledge is the key to being able to go on voyages of discovery in the old sources themselves.

All participants will receive a comprehensive collection of materials - as a basis for their work during the two weekends, but also as a starting point for further independent studies.

Target group

The target group is all lovers of polyphonic music (professional and non-professional) who can read modern notation. The maximum number of participants is limited to 10 to 12.

Sundays: 10.30-12.30 and 14.30-17.00

Op donderdagavond 4 Oktober werden in Londen de prestigueuze Gramophone Classical Music Awards 2023 uitgereikt.  Het wereldwijd meest gekende en befaamde muziektijdschrift Gramophone geeft elk jaar de Awards uit voor de beste cd-opnames van het jaar in het domein van de “klassieke” muziek. De cd’s worden streng geselecteerd door de gespecialiseerde muziekpers.

Dit jaar waren er honderden inzendingen en slechts 11 cd's kregen een prijs. In de sectie 'Oude muziek’ werd de Gramophone Award 2023 unaniem toegekend aan het Huelgas Ensemble voor de opname van dit jaar verschenen album met twee polyfone missen van Ludwig Daser (ca.1515-1589), een quasi vergeten componist.

Een fragment uit de beoordeling van de jury spreekt boekdelen :

“… This is a rare case where composer and executants have unlocked each other in award-winning fashion. Over decades, Paul Van Nevel has had a remarkable capacity for persuading us that we are not looking hard enough. His Huelgas Ensemble always reminds us that choral polyphony is much more about how we react to an individual musical personality than about the reputation of the figure in question…”

Een delegatie van het Huelgas Ensemble, samen met de directeur van Sony Classical, Michael Brüggemann, hebben temidden een ovatie van het zevenhonderd koppige gespecialiseerde publiek de prijs in ontvangst genomen.

On Thursday evening, the 4th of October, the prestigious Gramophone Classical Music Awards 2023 were presented in London.  The world-renowned music magazine Gramophone issues the awards each year for the best CD recordings of the year in the field of ‘classical’ music. The CDs are rigorously selected by the specialist music press.

This year there were hundreds of entries, and only 11 CDs received an award. In the ‘Early Music’ section, the Gramophone Award 2023 was unanimously awarded to the Huelgas Ensemble for its recording of this year's album of two polyphonic masses by Ludwig Daser (c.1515-1589), a quasi-forgotten composer.

An excerpt from the jury's assessment speaks volumes :

“… This is a rare case where composer and executants have unlocked each other in award-winning fashion. Over decades, Paul Van Nevel has had a remarkable capacity for persuading us that we are not looking hard enough. His Huelgas Ensemble always reminds us that choral polyphony is much more about how we react to an individual musical personality than about the reputation of the figure in question…”

A delegation from the Huelgas Ensemble, along with Sony Classical director Michael Brüggemann, accepted the award amid an ovation from the seven hundred-strong specialised audience.

Jeudi soir, le 4 octobre, les prestigieux Gramophone Classical Music Awards 2023 ont été décernés à Londres.  Le magazine musical de renommée mondiale Gramophone décerne chaque année ces prix aux meilleurs enregistrements CD de l'année dans le domaine de la musique "classique". Les CD sont rigoureusement sélectionnés par la presse musicale spécialisée.

Cette année, il y a eu des centaines de candidatures, et seuls 11 CD ont été récompensés. Dans la section "Musique ancienne", le Gramophone Award 2023 a été décerné à l'unanimité au Huelgas Ensemble pour son enregistrement de deux messes polyphoniques de Ludwig Daser (v.1515-1589), un compositeur quasi oublié.

Un extrait de l'évaluation du jury est éloquent :

"... Il s'agit d'un cas rare où le compositeur et l'exécutant se sont mutuellement débloqués de manière primée. Au fil des décennies, Paul Van Nevel a eu la remarquable capacité de nous persuader que nous ne cherchions pas assez. Son Huelgas Ensemble nous rappelle toujours que la polyphonie chorale est bien plus liée à la manière dont nous réagissons à une personnalité musicale individuelle qu'à la réputation du personnage en question..."

Une délégation de l'ensemble Huelgas et Michael Brüggemann, directeur de Sony Classical, ont reçu le prix au milieu d'une ovation de la part du public spécialisé, fort de sept cents personnes.
