On 20 May we will give two concerts in the wonderful Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. The first concert  - ‘Momento mori’ - is inspired by the Latin phrase ‘remember that you must die’. This ancient philosophical and artistic reflection serves as a reminder of mortality and the fleeting nature of life, urging us to live a meaningful, mindful life. The second concert (‘Nachtkonzert’) is Lassus’ five-part Lamentations, performed in the the foyer of Elbphilharmonie.

In the latest edition of Elbphilharmonie Magazin there is an interesting article - ‘Consolation and Transcience : Why Renaissance music feels so profound and so personal. Even today.’ – by Helmut Mauró in relation to our two concerts.

Op 20 mei geven wij twee concerten in de prachtige Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Het eerste concert – “Momento mori” – is geïnspireerd door de Latijnse uitdrukking “gedenk dat je moet sterven”. Deze eeuwenoude filosofische en artistieke reflectie herinnert ons aan onze sterfelijkheid en aan de vergankelijkheid van het leven, en spoort ons aan om bewust en zinvol te leven. Het tweede concert (“Nachtkonzert”) brengt de vijfstemmige Lamentaties van Lassus, uitgevoerd in de foyer van de Elbphilharmonie.

In de nieuwste editie van het Elbphilharmonie Magazin staat een interessant artikel – “Troost en vergankelijkheid: waarom muziek uit de Renaissance zo diepgaand en persoonlijk aanvoelt, zelfs vandaag” – van Helmut Mauró, in verband met onze twee concerten.

Le 20 mai, nous donnerons deux concerts dans la magnifique Elbphilharmonie de Hambourg. Le premier concert – « Momento mori » – s’inspire de la phrase latine « souviens-toi que tu dois mourir ». Cette réflexion philosophique et artistique ancienne nous rappelle notre mortalité et le caractère éphémère de la vie, nous incitant à mener une existence pleine de sens et de conscience. Le second concert (« Nachtkonzert ») présente les Lamentations à cinq voix de Lassus, interprétées dans le foyer de l’Elbphilharmonie.

Dans le dernier numéro de l’Elbphilharmonie Magazin, on trouve un article intéressant – « Consolation et fugacité : pourquoi la musique de la Renaissance paraît si profonde et si personnelle, encore aujourd’hui » – signé Helmut Mauró, en lien avec nos deux concerts.

Klara: ‘Rond 1200 leidde de gotische architectuur van de nieuwe kathedraal van Parijs tot een kantelmoment in de muziekgeschiedenis. Want naast het gregoriaans ontstond meerstemmige muziek die nog steeds best experimenteel klinkt, vindt Mark Janssens. Paul Van Nevel en het Huelgas Ensemble zingen deze muziek van Leoninus en Perotinus met een verbluffend resultaat. Is het niet wonderlijk hoe ook na ruim 800 jaar deze vroege polyfonie ons blijft beroeren?’

Klara : « Vers 1200, l’architecture gothique de la nouvelle cathédrale de Paris a marqué un tournant dans l’histoire de la musique. Car, aux côtés du chant grégorien, est apparue une musique polyphonique qui sonne encore aujourd’hui de manière assez expérimentale, selon Mark Janssens. Paul Van Nevel et le Huelgas Ensemble interprètent cette musique de Léonin et Pérotin avec un résultat saisissant. N’est-il pas remarquable que, même après plus de 800 ans, cette polyphonie ancienne continue de nous émouvoir ? »

Klara: ‘Around 1200, the Gothic architecture of the new cathedral of Paris led to a turning point in the history of music. For alongside Gregorian chant, polyphonic music emerged that still sounds quite experimental, according to Mark Janssens. Paul Van Nevel and the Huelgas Ensemble perform this music by Léonin and Pérotin with a stunning result. Isn’t it remarkable how, even after more than 800 years, this early polyphony continues to move us?’

On Sunday 22 February from 10 am onwards, Belgian radio station Klara will broadcast ‘Dag van de Polyfonie’ - a day devoted to Franco-Flemish polyphony. Klara hosts Mark Janssens and Nicole Van Opstal will broadcast live from the House of Polyphony in Leuven, offering a celebratory tribute to polyphony. The programme will also feature an interview with Mark Janssens and Paul Van Nevel.

Le dimanche 22 février à partir de 10 heures, la station de radio belge Klara diffusera « Dag van de Polyfonie », une journée consacrée à la polyphonie franco-flamande. Les animateurs de Klara, Mark Janssens et Nicole Van Opstal, émettront en direct de la Maison de la Polyphonie à Louvain et rendront un hommage festif à la polyphonie. L’émission comprendra également une interview de Mark Janssens et Paul Van Nevel.
